Starts of the Week | Week 3

Quarterbacks

Cam Newton vs. Las Vegas

Cam is having a great start to the 2020 season, finishing as the overall QB3 through two weeks. He should have another big week against a below-average Raiders defense. So far the Raiders haven’t given up many fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks, but give up plenty of points to the skill positions. That should change this week, with Newton’s rushing ability and pin-point accuracy so far this year. When Cam reaches the goal line, it’s almost guaranteed he’ll be scoring a rushing touchdown. Not many quarterbacks have that upside. I’m expecting another great game from Cam this week, and he’s an easy start.

Justin Herbert vs. Carolina

Herbert, for all intensive purposes, had a good game in his first NFL start last week. He threw for over 300 yards, and looked confident in doing so. With Tyrod Taylor still being sidelined, he’ll get the start again this week against a struggling Panthers defense. I see two ways this game to go. The Chargers get out to an early lead and are able to score points right away, or it’s a close game throughout. Both of these scenarios lead to good fantasy production from Herbert, as well as the offense as a whole.

Runnings Backs

Kenyan Drake vs. Detroit

Drake is averaging 12 fantasy points per game through two weeks. Not great, but not hurting your team either. This should be a week where he is able to really put some points on the board. He’s playing against a Detroit team that’s giving up 37.55 fantasy points to running backs per game, and just had Aaron Jones score 43.6 points on them. And this should be a positive game script for the Cardinals. The Lions have struggled through two weeks, so we should see plenty of red zone looks for Drake, as well as a ton of touches in the second half of the game.

Miles Sanders vs. Cincinnati

In his first game of the season last week, Sanders was able to be a RB1. You could tell while watching the game that Carson Wentz was relying on Sanders in the run game. This week he has a great matchup against the Bengals, who gave up a combined four touchdowns to the Browns running backs last week. With Carson Wentz struggling to the throw the ball so far this year, I think the Eagles will just continue to run the ball with Sanders all game. Sanders has the potential to be the #1 overall running back this week, with one of the safest floors of any running back.

Wide Receivers

Tyler Lockett vs. Dallas

The Seahawks have been letting Russ cook this year, which has been great for both Lockett and Metcalf so far, with both being top-15 wide receivers through two weeks. This success should continue heading into week three. The Cowboys defense has been struggling so far this year, giving up 45.8 fantasy points to wide receivers on average through these two weeks. Lockett has had eight targets in each game so far this season, with only one incompletion. So with the efficiency of Wilson, the targets he’s getting each week, and a 57 point Over/Under, this should be a great game for Lockett.

Calvin Ridley vs. Chicago

This might be the easiest choice ever. Ridley has been the #1 overall wide receiver through two weeks, scoring 16.1 more points than #2 ranked Davante Adams. Heading into week three, he has a positive matchup against a Chicago team that, (in my opinion),  is not very good. His duo, Julio Jones, has misses practice all week with a sore hamstring, and is a game-time decision for Sunday. If Julio misses this week, Ridley will just be peppered with targets by Matt Ryan. I’m expecting great performances from both Ridley, and his underrated teammate Russell Gage.

Tight Ends

Hunter Henry vs. Carolina

Henry has eight targets in each game so far this season, and even with him not falling into the end zone, has been a solid fantasy tight end so far. For week three, he has a great matchup against the Panthers. Carolina’s defense is giving up 106.67 fantasy points a game to opposing offenses (which is a very high number). What’s great about Henry is you don’t have to rely on him getting a touchdown, but he is due one very soon. It could very well be a top-5 fantasy finish for Henry this week.

Drew Sample vs. Philadelphia

Sample had nine(!) targets last Thursday night, and Joe Burrow has shown he will target his tight ends a ton. Now Sample is the only tight end left for the Bengals, with C.J. Uzomah out for the season with a Torn Achilles. Sample’s snap percentage should skyrocket starting this week, giving him ample (lol) opportunity to get more targets. If the Bengals decide to use Sample in the red zone, that could end up being very successful, with the Eagles giving up three touchdowns to Tyler Higbee last week.
